August Bereavement Groups to Meet on Monday, August 7th and Monday, August 21st

Finding Comfort and Support:
A Jewish Bereavement Group

The loss of a loved one is felt differently by different people. Some who are grieving want extra support when times get more difficult, especially before holidays, but also at any time of year.

The Jewish Wellness & Healing Center at JFS has started a bereavement group. This group is an opportunity to receive peer support from individuals who have experienced something similar so you can cope a little easier.

The August meetings are scheduled on Monday, August 7th and Monday, August 21st. Each group member will get the opportunity to verbalize their feelings and receive appropriate feedback from other group members and the facilitator.

Rabbi Fred Hyman, Ed.D, Director of Pastoral Counseling of the JFS Jewish Wellness and Healing Center, who has many years of experience as a congregational rabbi and as a mental health clinician, will facilitate this group.

The group will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the JFS office 1440 Whalley Ave. New Haven.

If a bereavement support group might be of help to you, please know that you are
welcome to attend.

JFS Announces its New Board of Directors

At our Annual Meeting on June 14, JFS swore in its new slate of officers of the Board of Directors. The new officers are: President Linda Caplan, Vice President Ilene Rosalimsky Bronen, Treasurer Joel Sachs and Secretary Laura Elman.

Linda Caplan is honored and excited to serve as JFS’s next president. “I look forward to increasing JFS’s awareness in the community and helping to support its mission to assist the most vulnerable people in the New Haven area,” Caplan commented.

Linda began her affiliation with JFS as a volunteer in the food pantry four years ago.  Shortly after, Linda also became a volunteer in the Food4Kids Program, which provides nutritious weekend food for more than 250 New Haven children at risk of going hungry. This will be her second year on the JFS board, where she has served on the Fund Development Committee, chaired the Spring Gala and was a Co-Chair of the 2016 Food4Kids Annual Event.

JFS would also like to welcome new Board members Jacquie Slater and Ruth Ann Ornstein. We thank Betsy Fiske, Lori Ann Brass, Joe Adler, outgoing Board members, for their years of service.

JFS Congratulates its 2017 Family Champions

JFS is thrilled to congratulate Marietta Tucker, JFS Administrative Coordinator of Programs, and Cindy Papish Gerber, outgoing JFS Board President and long-time JFS Board Member. Both were named the 2017 JFS Family Champions on June 7th by the Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies. Both Cindy and Marietta were celebrated at a reception at the New Haven Lawn Club, which recognizes one staff member and one board member each year who have gone above and beyond.
